Volunteering:
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have volunteer opportunities?
Volunteers are the foundation of our organization. Our chapter has more
than 600 volunteers and only a small professional staff. In addition,
a volunteer Board of Directors governs the Foundation. We offer a wide
variety of volunteer opportunities involving granting wishes, office
help
and fundraising. Call our offices at 888/828-9474 for specific information.
How do I apply?
You may apply in one of two ways:
- You may attend one of our Volunteer
Orientation sessions. These orientation meetings are held every
two months in the Sacramento area. If you are
out of the greater
Sacramento area, call the office and we will fill you in on what
is available in your community.
- Or, you may print,
complete, and mail/fax the volunteer forms to us.
What kind of commitment is there?
Commitment levels vary, depending on your volunteer position. Because
of our large volunteer base, we are able to accommodate your schedule
most of the time. You may choose to become heavily involved or you may
sign up for special events one at a time as you read your quarterly
volunteer
newsletter.
All volunteers at the Make-A-Wish Foundation are charged
with the fragile and beautiful business of making dreams come true. It's
an important and precious job. We do expect a high level of commitment
and professionalism from our volunteers. But the rewards are tremendous!
Are volunteers very involved
with the children?
Of all our volunteer positions, wish volunteers offer the highest level
of involvement with wish children and their families. Wish volunteers
work
with the wish child and family to determine the child's most heartfelt
wish. After an initial meeting, the wish details are completed by staff
and the wish team revisits the child to complete the wish. Our emphasis
is on delivering a one-of-a-kind wish experience, rather than on developing
ongoing relationships with families or children.
Do you have volunteer positions that aren't
emotionally demanding?
Some people would like to help because they relate to our mission, but
would prefer little or no direct involvement with the families. That
can
be accommodated. All our volunteer positions contribute equally to our
mission and bring joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions
and
their families.
